Read the article “Sentence Variety” (Links to an external site.) and then write a response that discusses the importance of using sentence variety when writing:
- Find an example of a simple sentence in your rough draft.
- Explain why a simple sentence was most effective in this case, or explain why it might need to be changed to a different sentence type.
- Look at the sentences before and after. Are they both simple sentences as well? If so, does sentence variety need to be addressed here? Why or why not?
- Find an example of a complex sentence in your rough draft.
- Explain why a complex sentence was most effective in this case, or explain why it might need to be changed to a different sentence type.

- Find an example of a compound sentence in your rough draft.
- Explain why a compound sentence was most effective in this case, or explain why it might need to be changed to a different sentence type.
- Look at the sentences before and after. Are they both compound sentences as well? If so, does sentence variety need to be addressed here? Why or why not?
- Check all three sentences to see if they are correctly punctuated, and if not, address what changes need to be made and why.
- MAKE SURE YOU BOLD THE THESIS STATEMENT ( OUTLINE PUT UNDERNEATH )
Your discussion post must INTERPRET the text–not simply describe or summarize–which you are accustomed to doing. You must “read between the lines.”
This is a writing class, so how you write your posts matters.
First, begin with your interpretation; this is your thesis. Put it in Bold!
Second, chunk your supporting information into paragraphs of 1-3 sentences. This will make it easy for everyone to read.
Third, use the SIX CRITERIA (Audience, Purpose, Content, Mood, Style, Structure) to INTERPRET the text/prompt. Put these SIX words in BOLD just like the examples I posted in the Announcements.
Fourth, you must use at least one (but 2-3 is better) quotation from the text in your 300-400 word post!
Finally, don’t wait until the last minute. You can start posting on Monday, which is encouraged. The earlier you post, the more the class will be talking about your ideas. In the end, it makes it easier and more fun for you. Nonetheless, your initial post–your interpretation of the text–is due by Midnight on Wednesday.
BELOW are examples of exactly what your initial post should look like.
I WILL ADD AN A+ EXAMPLE BELOW
