This assignment asks you to watch a short video and read an article about the ways African history has been misrepresented by Europeans and Americans, and about the problems of incorporating African history into world history courses.
First, watch the 8-minute video by renowned African scholar Basil Davidson, entitled “The European Distortion of African History.” European Distortion of African History (Links to an external site.)Then, read the article by Jonathan Reynolds called “So Many Africas, So Little Time: Doing Justice to Africa in the World History Survey (Links to an external site.),” available from Volume 2:1 of World History Connected. Next, answer the following questions:
- Why, according to Basil Davidson, did Europeans tend to ignore African history until recently? Do you find his argument convincing?
- Why, according to Jonathan Reynolds, has African history had a difficult time becoming integrated in world history courses? What stereotypes do scholars and students commonly hold about Africa, and how do these affect the way we understand African history? Do you believe you have bought into to any of these stereotypes in the past?
- From both their tone and explicit statements, how do you think both Davidson and Reynolds regard African history? How do you think they believe African history should be told
- In other words, does it matter, from an historical perspective, if the Aryan migrations occurred or not? Why or why not?
Papers should be well-written and free of grammatical and typographic errors. Your grade will be based not only on whether or not you answered the questions sufficiently, but also on your ability to make a coherent argument and on your command of the English language. Errors and grammar problems will significantly detract from your grade! 500 word maximum.
Guideline:
Write a brief paper (maximum 500 words— about 2 double-spaced pages) that
- Summarizes the main points of the article
- Explores how the main arguments relate to the material in your textbook, and
- Discusses how this issue might shape the way historians view history.
