Plants/Bush Tucker Around the Area (Himanshu):

Aniseed Myrtle – This plant is native to the Gumbaynggir community. Gumbaynggir are an Aboriginal Australian community of Mid North Coast of NSW. This plant is rich in antioxidants and its aromatic leaves are distilled to create an essential oil. Aniseed Myrtle has more nutritional values than one. It is very high in vitamin C, E, folate, lutein, zinc, calcium and magnesium. The trees of this plant can grow up to 45 meters tall.

Murnong Yam Daisy  – This species of Murnong has known to be the main staple food for the Wurundjeri Aboriginal people. Murnong can be used in salads by mixing it with other vegetables. Murnong has a sweet and coconutty taste to it. Murnong can also be turned into a paste to be used in desserts.

Youlk – Youlk also known as Ravensthorpe radish, is found growing across different parts of Western Australia such as Ravensthorpe, Newdegate and Jerrmungup. Naturally occurring Youlk is of special significance in the  Aboriginal culture. It is known to be a marker of the identity of the indigenous, spirituality and connection to the land.

Native Leek – Native leek also known as bulging lily, wild onion. This native vegetable is found in dry sclerophyll forests, Red Gum woodlands, and grasslands, as well as in swamps and bogs across temperate Australia: central Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, eastern South Australia, and Tasmania. While most of the aerial parts of this plant aren’t considered good tucker. This plant has a sweet starchy corm that can be eaten year-round. It takes a few years for a young Native Leek to bear its first mature vegetable. This plant is one of the sweetest of all the lily plants. This plant has a nutritious corm that contains calcium and iron. The corm’s roots are also edible and they offer an onion-like flavour.
