Module 03 Discussion – Celebrating Diversity in Children’s Media

Learning Goal: I’m working on a psychology discussion question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.

This week, you will choose a children’s book, movie, or television series to analyze. The main focus of this discussion will be based on an underlying theme or representation of a celebration of diversity and the relation to one theory from the course.

Begin by providing a thorough but brief summary of the book/movie/tv show.

(Pretend you’re describing it to someone who isn’t familiar with it, but in a condensed way.)

For example:

Disney Junior’s Puppy Dog Pals.

Puppy Dog Pals is a show that follows two pug puppy brothers, Bingo and Rolly, on adventures. They live with their human, Bob, an inventor for puppy products, their kitty sister, Hissy, their robot brother, A.R.F., and fish sister, Oliva. Bob and his girlfriend, and co-owner of Puppy PlayCare, got married recently. Bob’s wife, Bonnie, has a puppy named Lollie. Together, with the help of their furry family and friends, Bingo and Rolly go on missions to avert crisis and save the day!

Then, discuss the underlying theme(s) present in your chosen media as they relate to diversity/bias. This may be easier than you think! How did the book/movie/tv show celebrate diversity? What lesson can a child learn from being exposed to this specific media? What surprised you about what you found? Was more than one type of diversity being explored? How can you relate one of the theories to your chosen media?

For example:

“The Dreidel Dilemma” was an excellent episode that showed and celebrated Hanukkah. During this episode, Bingo and Rolly help their furry neighbor friend Keia get her human’s unique dreidel to her at her grandparent’s house. At this point, you would go into more detail about the diversity and how it is portrayed. Your response should be thorough and provide examples.
