Fashion Project : Part 1

Learning Goal: I’m working on a art project and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.

NMP – Final Major Project: ESSAY (Proposal) & COLLECTION

This is your very first collection designed with no barriers or parameters other than the ones you choose. Its where you get to project your creativity, intellect, technical skill, identity in context of any given market, consumer, or tribe. This is the opportunity to put together all your experiences thus far and apply these academically from the written word to a directional range of contemporary outfits in a professional context.

Write a Proposal

  • The proposal should use Harvard APA 7th references throughout, and a bibliography should be included.

You will begin the module in semester one with a written proposal that sets out your intentions for the project and firmly centres your practice within a contemporary outlook. You will underpin both visual and theory-based research, justify your ideas and consider the impact of this research on the subsequent studio Practice. You will have a formative submission of work on the 2nd December 2022 that will provide feedback to move you forwards into the collection and a suggestion of the appropriate grade banding at this stage of the project. It is expected that this is the final submission point for the proposal, so ensure that it is completed. As the module is 100% you wont get a specific mark for the proposal, just a suggested banding.

You will be provided with a more in-depth brief during the launch on the 23rd September, 2022.

Part:1

  • Justification 200 Words (REFLECTION & ANALYSIS OF COTEXT)

The justification section is about contextualizing the project to the industry and the reasoning behind you choosing the direction you are going in. Justification can come from a number of sources. You are justifying why you made this decision; it is about exploring your values as a designer, and also as a human being. Think about what made this choice so important to you. Personal reasons? Social injustice? Promoting diversity? Celebrating life? Comfort? The list goes on. It is also about justifying it in the context of the market you see yourself designing for – connected to tribes it might be discussing how your ideas are suitable for the people who would wear your clothes, are you designing for luxury/mid-market/conscious markets, etc – ultimately, what makes this idea contemporary, new, innovative and desirable? Through this justification process, you are attempting to prove that you understand the value of your work and where it sits.

  • Literature Review (Theory and Analysis) 400 words (4 x 100-word academic summaries)

Your literature review will provide you with an opportunity to show an understanding of the theory and contextual research you are looking at, and discuss the main themes that come up within in. For example, those of you looking at Gender would (should) be looking at Judith Butler’s seminal work on gender and performativity (Gender Trouble, 1990). By extracting a few key quotes, you would do a very short literature review on what is means, unpacking the main themes and what they were saying in the work, and how it might impact your direction. You should choose 4 key pieces of theory (articles/book chapters etc) related to your concept & research and summarise the main arguments. For the Literature Review, we want you to focus on theory and academic literature, however, you may also use things taken from popular culture sources (books & magazine articles) to help contextualise your ideas within contemporary fashion design within the next section, Main Body.

  • I WILL UPLOAD guide for the whole project but for now, you only need to do these two parts:
  • 1.Justification (200 words)
  • 2. Literature Review (Theory and Analysis) 400 words (4 x 100 words academic summaries)
