Guidelines for final papers

Spring 2022

Your final paper should explore in depth one of the topics that we have studied in class and analyze one object or group of objects. It should be 10 pages long—not less or will be marked down. Honors students are to be 12-13 pages, and graduate student 14-15.  Students are responsible for choosing a topic and should meet with me in my office hours to discuss their selected topic by Week 6 of the semester. One month prior to the deadline you should turn in an outline, brief description of the project and bibliography: April 12 or earlier. Paper outline and bibliography are mandatory.

Final papers are due on May 6. Late papers will be penalized one letter grade per day late.

PRESENTATION: In the last two weeks of the semester, students will give a presentation of their research projects. These should be ten minutes long and students should prepare a PowerPoint or Keynote that includes the main images of their projects. Typically, four to four and a half double-space pages should make ten minutes, but you do not have to turn in a document with your notes! Students should practice and time their presentations.

Deadline: Papers are due on Friday, May 6; you can submit them using Blackboard, I will create a link for you to do so. Late papers will be penalized one letter grade per day late.

Length: Regular student papers should be 10 pages long, while honors and graduate students should be 12-13 pages long. All pages should consist of written text only and the images should all be placed at the end of the paper. Images DO NOT COUNT as part of the 10 pages of written text requirement. Papers that use images as “page-fillers,” inserting them within the written text will not fulfill the requirement and the grade will therefore be negatively affected.

Format:

Papers should be double-spaced and written in a regular font such as Times New Roman, Arial, or Cambria, and in size 12. Margins should be 1” to 1.25” inches.

Images: All images must have proper captions: title, date, and culture.

** Very important: Quotes, correct citations and proper use of sources:

  • There should be no more than 3 quotes in the paper, to avoid using them as page fillers.
  • Quotes should not be longer than 2-3 sentences, longer quotes will be.
  • Every single time you quote an author you should use quotation marks to separate his/her text from your own words and you should reference this source very clearly in a footnote/endnote, and include it in your bibliography. Before or after the quote you should mention the name of the author and source. Plagiarism will result in a failing grade.
  • Do not try to pass some other person’s text, words, or ideas as your own, as this is a violation of copyright laws and will be strictly enforced. All acts of academic dishonesty are monitored by the All-University Academic Integrity Board.
  • Internet sites are not valid sources for your final paper. Copying information from an Internet site also constitutes plagiarism.

Bibliography: Papers must include a bibliography of no less than 10-15 sources. All sources should be quoted using the Chicago Manual of Style.

  1. You can find the Chicago Manual of Style format either online: http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguidhtml
